Introduction

The amount of information given varies enormously. For each county I have endeavoured to give an account of the origins of the name, a brief description of the geography and history of the county, a list of some related (non-genealogical) web-sites, an account of genealogical resources, a bibliography and a description (listed below) of those towns and villages in the county in which I have a family history interest. This is achieved much more comprehensively for some counties than it is for others.

Some towns and villages have a web page devoted to them. In most of those cases I have given an account of the origins of the name, a brief description of the geography and history of the town/village, a list of some related (non-genealogical) web-sites, an account of genealogical resources, a bibliography, some photos, a list of the surnames I am researching in the town/village and an invitation for others with a family or local history interest to have the details shown. In some cases I have included further, detailed, genealogical information.

The remaining towns and villages (the majority at present) have what information there is included within the relevant county page. In some cases this is fairly extensive, but at the other extreme just the place name is mentioned, awaiting the later addition of information as I acquire it and have time to incorporate it.
